ABOUT PINHOLE SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive treatment option to reverse gum recession without the use of gum grafts and sutures. Pinhole surgery is an amazingly ingenious procedure that combines a traditional periodontal surgical procedure which uses positioned gum flaps and bone growth to reverse gum recession and a new procedure to complete the healing more quickly.

During the procedure a small pinhole is created by piercing the gum above the receded gum area and a special instrument for this procedure is inserted through that hole to elevate the gum and bring it down to cover the exposed root. The real genius of this procedure is the use of the collagen strips afterwards to aid in healing and keep the gum in place while the patient’s healing is completed!

Collagen strips are cut and placed under the gums through the same pinhole that was used to correct the receded gum line and assist in holding the gums in place while the patient is healing.

A happy patient!

James, who recently had his gum recession treated with Pinhole Gum Surgery, talks about his experience:

Dr. Zidile was trained in California by Dr. Chao, the inventor of this technique. Him and Dr. Gordon are both currently Board Certified Periodontists in Brooklyn and are certified to perform this procedure.

What is gum recession?

Gum recession occurs when gum tissue pulls back up the root of the tooth. This can occur as a result of periodontal disease (gingivitis, periodontitis, advanced periodontitis), the natural aging process, or abrasive habits when it comes to brushing the teeth.

When gum recession occurs, the root of the tooth becomes exposed. This means that tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gum line and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness.

What is the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST)?

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Unlike traditional grafting techniques, PST is incision and suture free. All of the tools and techniques used to perform the technique were created by Dr. John Chao, who trained Dr. Zidile and Dr. Gordon on the technique.

How does this surgical technique differ from traditional gum grafting?

Traditional gum recession treatment use donor tissue or soft tissue grafts in order to grow gum tissue. This graft is sutured in place and would join with existing gum tissue as it healed. While this traditional grafting treatment is effective, comparable results with a better patient experience can be achieved through pinhole surgery.

How is Pinhole Surgical Technique performed?

During the procedure, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to loosen the gums. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique.

What are the benefits of the Pinhole® Surgical Technique?

The benefits are:
1. Less discomfort for the patient
2. Faster recovery
3. No need for sutures
4. No need for a scalpel
5. No need to take donor tissue from the patient’s palate
6. Excellent, natural-looking, long-lasting results[/fusion_text]
